Prevention/ Education Services
Youths receive contradictory, double-blind communications from society as a whole regarding alcohol and other drug use. It is impossible to watch a sports event, go to the movies, or read a magazine without being confronted with advertisements. The abuse of alcohol and other drugs is a national health problem. As with other public health problems, we see evidence of the enormous cost to society long before we pinpoint the causes of the problem. Although research has not yet identified for us all the causes of alcohol and drug problems, we have identified factors that are correlated with substance abuse and protective factors that moderate the effects of exposure to risk. These factors can be classified as being rooted in characteristics of five domains: the individual, the family, the school, peer groups, and the community. These are factors that place youth at risk for using alcohol and other drugs. The more risk factors that apply to the youth in a target population, the greater the chance these youth will use alcohol or other drugs.
Dickenson County Behavioral Health Services has offered community and school-based prevention programming since 1979. We define prevention as activities that involve people, families and communities and systems working together to promote their strengths and potentials. Prevention is aimed at substantially reducing the incidence of alcohol and other drug dependency and abuse. The emphasis is on the enhancement of protective factors and the reduction of risk factors.
